I'm Sam, a 1st Dan in Ju Jitsu, and I built DojoNotes: a free mobile app that helps students keep their syllabus, training notes, videos and voice memos in one place. If you run or teach at a club, this page explains what it does and how to share it with your students.

I originally built it for myself. I was scribbling notes in a notebook, typing them up later, and trying to keep track of training videos buried in my camera roll. Over time, I realised I was spending almost as much time organising my notes as I was actually using them.

DojoNotes is my attempt to solve that.

Students can structure their syllabus the way it is actually taught:

Belt → Section → Technique.

For example:

Orange Belt → Arm Locks (3) → Figure-4 Arm Lock.

Each technique can include written notes, a short video, and a voice memo. Everything is stored locally on the student's phone, with no account required, no internet needed, and no data leaving the device.

The main benefits are:

  • Students can spend more class time training and less time trying to write everything down
  • Notes, videos, and voice memos are kept together in one place
  • It makes revision easier before gradings
  • It is privacy-friendly, which is especially useful for younger students

If you think your students would find it useful, here's a short message you can paste into a group chat or social post:

Hey everyone - a fellow martial artist has built a free app called DojoNotes for tracking your syllabus. You can add belts, techniques, notes, videos, and voice memos, all stored on your phone with no account needed and nothing leaving your device. It's free on Android, and he's actively looking for feedback from martial artists. Worth a look if you're tired of juggling notebooks and training videos: https://dojonotes.app

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Any feedback or shares would be hugely appreciated.

Oss,

Samuel Allen
